Agglomeration Spray Cyclones : It
is a well known fact that cyclones and multiclones can not be
economically designed for dust separation for particles below 10 microns
in size. Hence due to this limitation many applications of pollution
control or product recovery necessitates to install alternative
equipment such as an Bag House or an ESP.
This usually happens when processing low cost materials where the cost
of the pollution control equipment becomes relatively high .
In such cases of high temperature gas flow and low cost product or waste
dust separation , It usually pays to install an Agglomeration Spray
Cyclone. In an agglomeration
spray cyclone , hot gases are entered like a cyclone and a spray of
liquid ( usually water ) is sprayed. The dust particles higher than 10
microns get separated in the usual manner where as the dust particles
finer than 10 microns carry the water and agglomerate with other fine
particles to increase in size. The hot gases expel the moisture and now
these higher size agglomerated dust particles get separated. In
this manner , many more particles finer than 10 microns which otherwise
could not have been separated by a conventional cyclone are removed and
the cleaned gas carries much lesser dust concentrations than otherwise
with a conventional dry cyclone. Additionally the gas temperature and
hence volume is also reduced However
, the spray cyclone has limitations that it can not be used on
hygroscopic , or pasty dusts .
